KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken Review

I first heard about KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken when I was scrolling through my Facebook feed.

I saw a post from KFC announcing their new plant-based alternative to chicken, and I was intrigued.

I clicked on the link in the post and read more about the new menu item. I was curious about the taste and texture of the chicken, as well as how it compared to regular fried chicken.

I decided to try KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken for myself. I ordered a 6-piece bucket, which cost me $6.99 plus tax.

The texture was spongy and not as moist as I would have liked. But I think for vegans in this price getting a substitute for fried chicken nuggets is worth giving it a try.

I only recommend products that I love and use myself, and I hope you will love your KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken as much as I do!

What is KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken?

KFC is the first national fast food chain to launch a plant-based chicken product. The Beyond Fried Chicken is made with a blend of pea protein, wheat, and soy flour.

KFC first announced their plans to release a plant-based alternative to chicken in August of 2019. The chicken was developed in partnership with Beyond Meat, and it is made from soy and wheat protein.

The chicken is vegan, and it is meant to taste similar to regular fried chicken. It is fried in the same pressure fryers as KFC’s regular chicken. Each piece has 20g of protein and 0g of cholesterol.

Pricing

It’s available in a tub of 6 or 12 pieces, or as KFC’s first ever plant-based combo meal with Secret Recipe Fries and a medium drink. The prices begin at $6.99 plus tax, and may vary depending on region.

Features

Texture is great

I believe the flavor and texture are good enough that vegans who are used to artificial meats would love them.

The moisture is on point

When I bit into the nuggets, I could feel the dampness or can say the moisture.

Unique flavor

It did have a slight briny flavor to it, albeit it was very subtle.

Good substitute to real fried chicken

The fried chicken was spongy that could see the stringy, real-chicken texture, but after I started eating, I didn’t notice it.

First Impressions

I was first curious about the interiors. Some chains grind up the chicken, while others keep it in bits, giving it a stringy appearance.

The visuals impressed me, but the flavor and texture of the bite fell short of my expectations. I could see the stringy, real-chicken appearance, but once I started eating, I couldn’t feel it.

Instead, it seemed firm and spongy to me. The seasoned breading was mostly responsible for the flavor. The flavor’s were salty and peppery.

Thoughts on Using KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken

I think it’s a great product for people who want to reduce their meat consumption or for those who are looking for a delicious, plant-based alternative to chicken.

The flavor and texture are both very similar to regular fried chicken, and I would definitely order it again.

If you’re considering trying KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken, I say go for it! It’s a delicious, plant-based alternative to chicken that tastes just as good as the real thing.

The only drawbacks that I felt was that when I bit down on the nuggets, instead of hot juices gushing out and filling my tongue with flavor, all I got was wetness.

It tasted mushy in my mouth and didn’t explode like other nuggets do. Also sadly, the breading flaked off, reducing my delight of these.

My Results/Verdict

While I enjoyed the nuggets, I think they still have some work to do in terms of flavor and texture. The nuggets were too mushy for my liking and the breading didn’t have that satisfying crunch that I was expecting.

However, I would still recommend them to anyone looking for a delicious, plant-based alternative to chicken.

Pros:

Tastes similar to regular fried chicken

Available at select locations nationwide

Good substitute to real fried chicken

Cons:

Mushy texture

Breading falls off easily

Not as flavorful as I would like
